The Colima Volcano is one of the oldest active volcanoes in Mexico, located on the border of the states of Colima and Jalisco. Around the volcano, a great variety of plant and animal species and communities live and depend on the water in the area.
The Volcán de Fuego, Montaña de Agua (Fire Volcano, Water Mountain) initiative was born to green the northern area of Colima to improve water catchment and infiltration through activities aimed at protecting and restoring the region’s biodiversity and implementing better land management practices in the urban area and rural communities.
Volcán de Fuego, Montaña de Agua is possible thanks to the synergy of civil society organizations and the business sector, with the participation of Cervecería Artesanal de Colima, the Mexican Fund for the Conservation of Nature (FMCN in Spanish), the Gonzalo Río Arronte Foundation (FGRA in Spanish), the ejido community of Quesería, and over 500 volunteers who have joined in the conservation on the foothills of the volcano.
FONNOR manages this project, which includes the following conservation activities:
● Reforestation of key areas for water infiltration
● Plant cultivation and care
● Substrate and vermicompost production● Talks and activities to raise awareness and public policy advocacy
