Agriculture and livestock farming are major sources of rural economy and food supply. However, these activities can threaten ecosystems when sustainable production practices are not in place, leading to deforestation and land degradation.
To reduce these pressures, we aim to align land planning and management processes and adopt good production practices and the sustainable use of natural resources, known as integrated landscape management.
CONECTA aims to improve integrated landscape management and promote sustainable production practices in the livestock and agroforestry sector in watersheds vulnerable to climate change and affected by soil erosion in Jalisco, Veracruz, Chiapas, and Chihuahua.
The five-year implementation of the project (2021-2026) is the responsibility of the National Institute of Ecology and Climate Change (INECC, acronym in Spanish), in charge of technical leadership, which forms CONECTA’s Technical Committee, and FMCN, responsible for the fiduciary aspects. In addition, nine federal agencies participate in the project through the Coordinating Committee, which seeks to scale CONECTA’s impact by aligning public and private investments. CONECTA’s funding comes from the Global Environment Facility (GEF), through the World Bank, and complementary funding (GEF co-financing).
FONNOR coordinates the implementation of the project, particularly in the five target watersheds: El Tuito, El Cuale, Las Juntas, Pitillal y Ameca-Mascota.
The lines of work (components) that guide CONECTA’s actions are::
- Development and promotion of integrated landscape management.
- Strengthening business skills for sustainable livestock and agroforestry.
- Conservation, restoration and implementation of climate-smart production practices in livestock and agroforestry landscapes.
- Project coordination, collaboration and knowledge management.
