The Puerto Vallarta region is rich in natural resources; the mountain systems surrounding it form watersheds that provide all kinds of ecosystem services to its inhabitants. The primary beneficiary of these services, mainly water provision, is the tourist destination of Puerto Vallarta; however, the strong demand for water compromises its future availability for the population’s needs and the livestock, agricultural, and forestry activities in the area.
It is, therefore, essential to have strategies that lead the region towards integrated water management, consistent with the regenerative management of the territory.
The main objective of this project is to promote the integrated management of the watersheds that drain Puerto Vallarta and the Puerto Vallarta aquifer to contribute to the long-term sustainability of this tourist spot.
This project has six components:
- Conserving priority sites by certifying them as Areas Voluntarily Destined for Conservation.
- Restoring degraded sites.
- Joining efforts for territorial planning.
- Strengthening the capacities of local stakeholders in water-related issues.
- Innovating in financing mechanisms for conservation.
- Implementing a watershed health monitoring and management protocol.
How do we do it?
- Through accompaniment and technical assistance to implement the property conservation management strategy.
- Purchase of materials for restoration actions focused on increasing forest cover, improving soils, and production practices.
- Organization and facilitation of workshops related to integrated watershed management.
